Building new friendships with like-minded people

Nau Mai Haere Mai - Welcome to our website

We’re a bunch of neuro-divergent people in the Wellington region. All of us are somewhere on the Autism spectrum or have ADHD.

We tend to do things in unusual ways, because our brains are wired differently. Most of us prefer to doing things solo.

Due to these behavioural differences, it’s difficult for us to maintain friendships with neuro-typical people.

This group was established to act as a haven for neuro-divergent folk who no longer attend high school/college.

We meet typically twice a month to interact in ways we appreciate. That could be boardgames, painting, thinking out loud, et cetera. But we also meet on an irregular basis for what ever pops to mind: a movie on a rainy Sunday afternoon, mini golf on a sunny Saturday, a walk along the waterfront or in the botanical gardens.

If this appeals to you, feel free to drop by. Check our events calendar below to find our next gathering. If this appeals to you, but you don’t feel confident, just let us know via the contact form and we’ll make an individual introduction arrangement for you.

It all started when…

… Greta Thunberg addressed the UN with her “How dare you” speech. A newspaper wrote Greta was diagnosed with Aspergers.

The initiator of this group felt a bond with Greta due to their mutual interest in environmental issues and climate change, but he knew little about Aspergers, which triggered him to do some research.

Whilst reading Wikipedia he started realising he also had Aspergers, which immediately allowed all the missing pieces of the puzzle to fall in the right place.

After formal diagnosis, the initiator had some counselling. The psychologist suggested to attend an adult meetup group. Since this did not exist in the Wellington area, the initiator started one with support from Autism NZ.

We are extremely grateful that Lion’s Club Lower Hutt provided us in 2024 with a another grant. That allows us to continue this website and safeguard our group from fees.

We’d like to extend our thanks to COOPER & LEON for their donation, which extends our website with another 3 months!

Laurence

I really like coming to the ASD boardgames group, in Petone and Johnsonville. It has been a great opportunity for me to make new friends, and play a variety of games. I look forward to our next meetup, and to going mini golfing again!

Annabel

I really love coming to the ASD board game meetups in Petone and Johnsonville. It has made me become a more confident person. Everyone there is so lovely and it’s good be around like minded people. Also, playing board games is one of my favourite leisure activities.
